General remarks about neural network text generation

I need more coffee…

shaking her head a bit Hi.

You’ve reached this page because you clicked on my name in a blog comment, on an article that reeked of AI.

I am not here to say that the article you just read was ChatGPT-generated. I’m really not. What I am here to say is that it looks like a Markov chain of meaning - it’s grammatically correct, and most of the time even related to the topic supposedly at hand, but nonsensical (“colourless green ideas sleep furiously” sec. Noam Chomsky).

In most cases, this does little, if any, harm, except to the supposed writer’s credibility. In a case I recently came across, it could’ve gotten someone killed (because it was about using a pickax in the garden correctly - a topic of importance to me as I have a pick-mattock which I need to use for things from earthworks to shallow tillage).

If you must use ChatGPT, you should give your post a thorough once-over before letting it go out. Likely, you’ll want to chuck it all out and rewrite it by hand anyway.
